Mayor sends best wishes to twin towns

The Mayor of Warminster, Councillor Paul Macfarlane has sent best wishes to Warminster Twin Towns. The Mayor wrote to his counterparts in Warminster in Pennsylvania, USA, Flers in France and Elblag in Poland.

The Mayor received a lovely reply from a resident of Warminster, USA, who saw the letter on Facebook and was moved to respond.

Both the Mayors letter and the response are set out below.

The Mayors Letter

I am writing to send the best wishes to you and your community from the Councillors and people of Warminster. We want you to know that we are thinking about you at the very difficult time.

Twinning has been a marvellous way to strengthen the links between our residents and at time of trouble we all tend to reflect on what is most important in life, such as family, friendship and good health. I know these things with be at the forefront of the minds of your residents

This virus has affected people all over the world. Nowhere is untouched by some consequence or other.
We are restricted here in Warminster, Wiltshire to only leaving our homes for essential reasons. These are
shopping for basic necessities, one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle, for a medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person and for travelling for work purposes, but only when someone cannot work from home.

Thus far, we have escaped the worst. A few have lost friends, relatives and colleagues, many more are stressed by the uncertainty and the changes that are having to be made in response to the virus. Of course, we are fearful of further suffering but we are also glad to live in such a close knit community and determined that at some point we will reach a brighter future.

I am sure that in your town, just as in Warminster, people are pulling together, helping each other and looking out for each other. This is how good things are achieved.

We send you are thoughts, prayers and best wishes.

yours
Councillor Paul Macfarlane

The Reply from a resident.

Good afternoon, Mr. Macfarlane.
My name is Lisa and I am a resident of Warminster, Pennsylvania. Our township manager posted your letter today on FB and it was lovely to hear from you. Times are trying for all of us right now but it's these little acts of kindness that make the days seem less long and the future much more bright. I'm not presuming to know how you feel about the Queen; however, her speech yesterday, and reading your thoughtful letter today have both done a great deal to lift my spirits. Your kindness will not be forgotten and we will see this through.
I hope you, your family, and your community of Warminster stay well. I will keep you all in my thoughts.
Sincerely,
Lisa
